💡 Tips:

  • Use H.265/HEVC for 40-50% bandwidth savings
  • Add 20% overhead for network/protocol headers
  • For multicast IPTV, plan for peak concurrent viewers
  • Test at minimum bitrate first, increase if quality suffers

Understanding Video Bitrates

Video bitrate determines the quality and bandwidth requirements of your stream. Higher bitrates mean better quality but require more network bandwidth.

Key Factors

  • Resolution: More pixels require more data (4K needs ~4x the bitrate of 1080p)
  • Frame Rate: Higher FPS needs proportionally more bandwidth
  • Codec: H.265/HEVC is ~40-50% more efficient than H.264
  • Motion: High-motion content (sports) needs higher bitrates than talking heads

Bandwidth Planning

When planning your network, remember to account for concurrent viewers. With multicast IPTV, each channel is sent once regardless of viewer count. With unicast, multiply bitrate by number of viewers.
